Description An account of the resource The Ohio Synod authorized the formation of a classis in Iowa in 1853. This Classis was organized at Tipton, IA, on September 16, 1859. A division occurred in the Classis in 1869, primarily over language, but also other issues. Two factions met. The 1869 General Synod called for a reunion in 1870, but it failed. The Ohio Synod that year seated the delegates from the German faction. The Synod agreed to a division by language in 1871. This solution was not fully legal until the 1872 General Synod approved the existence of German-language classes. Data reported with this Classis continued through the English Iowa Classis reorganized October 5, 1871, at Zwingle, IA. This Classis returned to the name Iowa Classis in 1874. It became a charter member of the Interior Synod in 1887. It was transferred to the Midwest Synod in 1921. In 1939 all congregations became part of the Iowa Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed Church. Reports to the Ohio Synod from 1860-1886, the Interior Synod from 1887-1920, and the Midwest Synod from 1921-1939.
